How much do ChatGPT ads cost in Australia?
Published 13 September 2026 · By Jason Cavallaro
ChatGPT advertising uses auction-based pricing. There is no single fixed Australian cost per click or cost per lead that applies to every business.

“What does a click cost?” is a reasonable question.
“What can we afford to pay to acquire the right customer?” is the question that makes the budget useful.
ChatGPT advertising uses auction-based pricing. There is no single fixed Australian cost per click or cost per lead that applies to every business. As checked on 27 September 2026, OpenAI recommends a starting maximum CPC bid of US$3–$5 for CPC campaigns. That is bidding guidance, not a measured Australian average, minimum spend or guaranteed price. OpenAI's pricing explanation.
Here is how to turn the pricing question into a sensible test plan.
Separate the bid, the budget and the result
Your bid relates to what you are prepared to pay under the selected buying approach. Your budget limits the planned spend. Your commercial result depends on what happens after the ad is delivered.
OpenAI documents different bidding approaches and daily or lifetime budget controls, with availability depending on the setup. Check the current campaign options rather than treating a figure in an example as a universal minimum. Bidding and budget documentation.
Also separate media spend from agency fees, creative work, landing-page improvements and measurement setup. A test should have a clear total cost, not a series of surprises after launch.
Work backwards from a qualified opportunity
For a business quoting projects, a useful chain is:
Advertising spend → clicks → enquiries → qualified enquiries → quotes → booked projects.
Each step answers a different question. Cheap clicks can produce expensive enquiries if the offer is unclear. Plenty of enquiries can produce few quotes if they concern the wrong projects.
Before launch, define “qualified.” It might mean the right service area, a suitable scope, a realistic timeline and enough information to assess the work. Choose criteria that reflect your business rather than dismissing every enquiry that does not buy immediately.
For an online store, a useful chain is advertising spend → visits → purchases → attributed revenue. Check verified order values, gross margin, fulfilment costs and other marketing costs before deciding whether the result works. ROAS measures revenue relative to ad spend, not profit.
An illustrative service-business budget example
The following service-business numbers are hypothetical Australian-dollar assumptions. They are not ChatGPT benchmarks, a forecast or Elite campaign results.
| Test assumption | Example |
|---|---|
| Advertising spend | A$1,000 |
| Average cost per click | A$5 |
| Clicks | 200 |
| Enquiries | 10 |
| Qualified enquiries | 5 |
| Quotes issued | 4 |
| Projects booked | 1 |
Under those assumptions, the media cost is A$100 per enquiry, A$200 per qualified enquiry, A$250 per quote and A$1,000 per booked project.
Whether that works depends on the project's contribution after delivery costs, the additional marketing costs and the capacity required. A$1,000 to acquire a project is neither automatically good nor automatically bad.
Now imagine the same spend produces five enquiries instead of ten, with only one qualified. The click cost has not changed, but the business case has. This is why an isolated CPC figure cannot tell you whether a campaign is healthy.
Set decision rules before the test
Our recommendation is to agree on a review budget, the minimum evidence needed to make a decision and conditions for adjusting or pausing.
Useful questions include:
- Are ads reaching suitable locations and producing relevant visits?
- Does the landing page turn those visits into genuine purchases or enquiries?
- Is the team responding and recording what happened?
- Are the purchases or quote opportunities worth the acquisition cost and effort?
- Has enough time passed for this buying or project decision to progress?
Check tracking before interpreting a quiet dashboard. Likewise, one booked project is encouraging but does not establish a stable long-term acquisition cost.
What about conversions and return on ad spend?
OpenAI reporting includes advertising and conversion metrics, but the configured event defines what a conversion represents. A lead event is not the same as a purchase or a won project. Its reporting documentation also distinguishes unavailable data from a genuine zero. OpenAI reporting documentation.
Keep verified order data or the CRM outcome alongside the platform report. If your business quotes work weeks before a customer decides, assess cohorts over an appropriate period rather than treating the first week's outcome as final.
What should your agency recommend?
A useful recommendation explains why the channel fits, what the test will teach, what is included and how the result will be judged.
