How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

There is no guaranteed way to make ChatGPT recommend you. You can improve the information it may discover about your products or services, availability and experience, and measure whether your business appears in relevant answers.

“Which product or provider is right for what I need, and what should I compare before choosing?”

Imagine that question being asked while your next customer is sitting on the couch, comparing ideas and working out what they can afford.

If the conversation moves to suitable businesses, you want yours to be a credible option.

There is no guaranteed way to make ChatGPT recommend you. You can improve the information it may discover about your products or services, availability and experience, and measure whether your business appears in relevant answers. OpenAI describes search ranking as dependent on factors including relevance and reliability, with no guaranteed top placement. ChatGPT Search guidance.

Here is where to put the effort.

Give the digital referral desk something useful

Think about referring a business yourself. You would want to know what it offers, where it is available, whether it fits the need and why you trust it.

Treat those as the basic questions your online presence should answer.

A visitor should not have to piece together your products or services from an Instagram caption, your coverage from an old directory and your contact details from a blurry image.

Build a clear public record around:

  • Your real business name and reliable contact details.
  • The products or services you actually provide.
  • Your delivery coverage or genuine service areas and any important limits.
  • Relevant qualifications, licences or memberships where applicable.
  • Genuine product evidence or completed projects, authentic reviews and an understandable buying or quoting process.

This is our practical information checklist, not a claim that every item is a direct ChatGPT ranking factor.

A service example: turn completed projects into useful evidence

A gallery tells people what the result looked like. A project story can also explain why your business was a good fit.

For each suitable project, describe the customer's objective, the starting conditions, the agreed scope and the decisions that mattered. Include your own photographs with permission and an accurate description of the result.

For example, “Completed on a tight site with limited access” becomes more useful when you explain how access affected scheduling or material delivery.

You do not need to publish confidential budgets or identify the customer. You do need to distinguish genuine work from illustrative designs. A beautiful AI-generated room is not proof that your team built it.

For an e-commerce store, show the actual products you sell, relevant specifications, genuine reviews and accurate delivery and returns information. Stock illustrations or AI concepts do not prove what is in your inventory.

Make local information consistent

Check your website, Google Business Profile and reputable industry listings for outdated details. Correct inconsistencies that could send a customer to the wrong number, service or location.

Google identifies relevance, distance and prominence as local-ranking considerations. Its advice includes keeping business information complete and accurate. That is guidance about Google local results, not proof that a review count controls every assistant's recommendations. Google's local ranking guidance.

Ask for genuine feedback as part of the customer experience. Avoid invented reviews, purchased praise and directories that exist only to manufacture apparent authority.

Check whether ChatGPT can reach the information

OpenAI distinguishes its search crawler from its model-training crawler. Allowing OAI-SearchBot is a search-discovery decision; it does not require treating all OpenAI crawlers identically. OpenAI crawler documentation.

Have the website checked for blocked public pages, broken links, access challenges and important information that never appears as readable text.

Access creates an opportunity to be found. It does not guarantee inclusion, a citation or a recommendation.

Test the questions a real customer would ask

Start with a small, repeatable set of questions that reflects your actual business. These are illustrative test prompts, not claimed search-volume findings:

  • “Which [product category] suits [need]?”
  • “What should I compare before buying [product]?”
  • “Which businesses handle [project type] in [service area]?”
  • “What should I compare before choosing a provider for [project]?”
  • “Who is suitable for a project with [genuine constraint]?”

Record the platform, date, search setting, exact question and answer. Look for factual accuracy and relevant appearances, not just whether your name shows up once.

Check ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok separately where relevant. They are different products, and the same question need not produce the same answer.

What should you expect from an agency?

Ask for a baseline, a prioritised improvement plan, specific content work and a transparent monitoring method. Be cautious about anyone selling a guaranteed first recommendation.
