AEO vs GEO vs SEO?? What does your business actually need?
Published 1 September 2026 · By Jason Cavallaro
SEO helps people discover your website through search. AEO focuses on making your information useful in answers. GEO focuses on your visibility in AI-generated responses.

A customer used to ask, “What should I search for?”
Now they can ask an AI assistant, “Which product or provider is right for what I need, and what should I compare before choosing?”
That changes the conversation your business needs to be part of. It also explains why three marketing acronyms keep appearing in your feed.
SEO helps people discover your website through search. AEO focuses on making your information useful in answers. GEO focuses on your visibility in AI-generated responses. In practice, the work overlaps considerably.
You do not need three disconnected marketing plans. You need a business that is easy to find, understand and evaluate.
The difference in plain English
| Term | What it means | A useful question for your business |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimisation | Can people find our relevant pages when they search? |
| AEO | Answer engine optimisation | Does our content clearly answer what the customer is asking? |
| GEO | Generative engine optimisation | Can AI systems find and use credible information about us in generated answers? |
These are industry labels, not three official application processes. There is no universal “register for GEO” button.
Think of your online presence as the material someone would use to recommend you. SEO helps that material get discovered. Answer-focused content makes it easier to understand. AI visibility asks whether it is being used, cited or translated into an accurate description of your business.
Does AI search replace traditional SEO?
For Google, the foundation still matters. Its current guidance says established SEO practices support AI search visibility and that special AI-specific structured data is not required. Google's AI optimisation guidance.
That gives a business a sensible starting point: improve the information customers already need before buying another layer of jargon.
Consider a page that says:
We deliver exceptional solutions with unmatched expertise.
It sounds confident. It tells a prospective customer remarkably little.
Now consider this service-business example:
We manage residential improvement projects across our listed service areas, from the initial site visit through to the final handover. Before quoting, we confirm access, scope, materials and scheduling requirements.
The second example explains the work, the process and what happens next. Add genuine project evidence and accurate service details, and the page becomes more useful to someone comparing providers.
For an e-commerce store, the parallel is a product page with accurate materials and specifications, intended use, delivery and returns information, genuine product photography and customer feedback.
Neither wording is an AI ranking trick. One simply gives the reader more to work with.
What should you improve first?
Our recommended order is based on removing obstacles along the customer's decision journey.
First, check access. A polished page offers little value in search if the relevant crawler cannot reach it or Google is being instructed not to index it.
Second, explain the fit. Identify the products or services you provide, your delivery or service coverage, who the offer suits and any meaningful exclusions. A business that explains its limits can be easier to assess than one claiming to do everything.
Third, show evidence. Publish accurate product evidence or useful project examples, authentic reviews and relevant credentials. For service projects, explain what the customer needed, what made the job difficult and how you approached it.
Fourth, answer the questions that delay a purchase or enquiry. What affects price? Is a site visit necessary? What should the customer prepare? What is included? What could change the scope? For products, explain fit, specifications, availability, delivery and returns.
Finally, measure the result. Track relevant mentions and citations alongside purchases and attributed revenue, or website enquiries, qualified opportunities and booked work, as appropriate. Revenue is not profit. An attractive visibility score is only one part of the picture.
Where do AI Ads fit?
Paid advertising is a separate route to attention. It can put a labelled commercial message in front of eligible users. Organic AI visibility concerns whether your business appears in the assistant's independent answer or cited sources.
For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI says advertising does not influence its independent responses. An ad campaign therefore cannot purchase an organic recommendation. OpenAI's explanation.
The two services can still support the same business goal. Your advertising needs a convincing destination. Your visibility work needs clear, credible information. Both need a clear, measurable route to purchase or enquiry.
Do you need to learn all the terminology?
Enough to ask good questions, yes. Enough to become a full-time acronym collector, no.
Ask an agency what it will change, which platforms it will measure, how it will show its work and how those activities connect to the products or services you want to grow.
