Does AI-written content hurt SEO?
Published 4 September 2026 · By Jason Cavallaro
AI-assisted content does not automatically hurt Google visibility. The important questions are whether the content is accurate, useful and original, and whether it exists to help the reader rather than manipulate rankings.

An AI tool can draft a product description or service article before you have finished your coffee.
It can also confidently explain a service you do not offer, invent a project you never completed and give customers a timeframe your team cannot meet. For an e-commerce store, it may also invent ingredients, materials, compatibility or product benefits.
Speed is useful. Unchecked confidence is expensive.
AI-assisted content does not automatically hurt Google visibility. The important questions are whether the content is accurate, useful and original, and whether it exists to help the reader rather than manipulate rankings. Google's guidance focuses on quality rather than banning content because AI helped produce it. Google on AI-generated content.
For any business, the practical risk is often credibility. A misleading article can create the wrong expectation before you ever speak to the customer.
Four ways a fast draft becomes a problem
1. It invents proof
A model may fill gaps with plausible details. “Twenty years of experience,” “fully licensed” and “completed within two weeks” are not decorative phrases. They are claims that need verification.
Our recommendation is to supply an approved fact sheet and require the draft to flag missing details. Never turn a generated customer quote into a testimonial.
2. It sounds like every other website
If the article could belong to any business after changing the name, it probably says too little about yours.
Add details that come from doing the work: an access problem, a common misunderstanding about scope, a decision customers often overlook or an example of how preparation affects the quote.
The point is not to sound more complicated. It is to give the reader something they could not get from a generic summary.
3. It produces pages without a purpose
Publishing a large volume of thin pages can create clutter and inconsistent information. Google's scaled-content abuse policy covers low-value material produced at scale to manipulate rankings, including material made with generative AI. Google's spam policies.
Before commissioning another article, ask: which customer question does this answer better than the pages we already have?
4. It gives advice nobody checked
Project content can touch on safety, approvals, standards and costs. A fluent paragraph is not a substitute for someone qualified to check the relevant claim.
Keep customer-facing explanations within your actual expertise. If a requirement varies by location or circumstance, explain the limitation and use an appropriate authoritative source.
A practical AI-and-human workflow
This is the editorial process we recommend:
| Stage | Useful role for AI | Responsibility that stays with your team |
|---|---|---|
| Research | Group customer questions and suggest gaps | Decide which questions matter and verify sources |
| Brief | Organise approved facts into an outline | Confirm products or services, claims and intended audience |
| Draft | Turn notes into a readable first version | Supply genuine experience and product or project evidence |
| Review | Flag repetition, vague language and missing answers | Check accuracy, permissions and technical details |
| Improve | Suggest clearer explanations and structure | Approve the final page and track its usefulness |
Do not upload private customer records just because a tool has a convenient text box. Prepare anonymised notes or use an approved system and process for that information.
A service example: before and after
Generic draft: “Our expert team delivers seamless solutions tailored to your unique needs.”
Useful revision: “Before quoting, we check the project scope, access requirements and any preparation needed. You receive a written breakdown of the agreed work and the assumptions behind the price.”
The revision is an illustrative example. It should only appear on your website if it accurately describes your process.
It gives the customer a clearer expectation and helps your team avoid explaining the same basics on every call.
Will AI-generated content make ChatGPT recommend us?
Using AI to write a page is not a placement mechanism. A draft still needs to become accurate, accessible, useful business content. An assistant may or may not discover or use it.
Judge the work by whether it improves your public information and supports relevant purchases or enquiries. There is no need to chase a mythical percentage of “human-written” sentences while overlooking a false claim about your business.
Elite's AI Visibility service brings website improvements, product and service content, genuine evidence and monitoring into a coordinated plan. Your team's real knowledge is the source material that makes that work distinctive.
